Proven: The Aliens Have Landed
This winner of a photo was not created in the computer. It is a real scene, photographed without any camera trickery.
What we see is a flying saucer hovering over Sydney. But it is not what Esther photographed. What she saw through her viewfinder, while on board a ferry, was an attractive scene of the Sydney central business district with stormy clouds. But what appeared on the film after processing was a flying saucer hovering over the buildings and lighting up the clouds! How could it have happened? Was it a fourth dimensional reality not visible to the naked eye yet recordable on film?
After much pondering, Esther solved the puzzle. Here’s her explanation:
“I was on a ferry coming in to Circular Quay and I thought I'd take a shot through the window. When I got the film back from the lab I was completely baffled. I thought something really spooky had happened—like out of The Extraordinary or something. It took days of studying the film but I think I've figured it out now. The round object is some sort of alarm or sprinkler in the ceiling of the ferry. Somehow my flash (which I thought was turned off) bounced off the ceiling and the image reflected on the inside of the window—I guess. Whatever happened, I still think it’s pretty weird.”
