Wandjinas, Mysteries of the Dreamtime

01

Esther’s search for Wandjina figures almost ended in despair. Once widely publicized, they are no longer made accessible to the average tourist to the Kimberley. Out of respect for the local aboriginal people, national parks and tourist operators have removed signs and directions pointing to their locations.

The caretaking of Wandjina figures is still carried out by some aboriginal owners where the tradition has been passed down, as evidenced by the touching up with fresh paint. But in some areas, the knowledge has been lost and the ceremonies abandoned. All that remains are the paintings which speak silently and eloquently through the cracked paint and haunting eyes. And perhaps through a lingering sense of something in the atmosphere?

This mini-feature would consist of a text of about 1000 words plus 3-5 photos.
