An Australian Seed That Can Feed Millions
Most Australians don’t know that their omnipresent wattle is a reliable, abundant source of nutritious food. Although some species have poisonous seeds, many produce seeds that are among the few “complete” protein foods. A plant that produces nutritious seeds but only in small volume is not much use to humans. However wattle puts out crops in sheer abundance.
Aboriginal Australians have survived on this bounty for tens of thousands of years. This article looks at the traditional aboriginal gathering and preparation of wattle seed and then leaps across cultures to the new fad for wattle coffee and other gourmet products.
