A Hollow is a Home

01

Riddle: what is absolutely nothing but gives almost everything?

Answer: a hollow in a tree!

If it wasn’t for hollows, a lot of Australian animals wouldn’t exist. Owls, parrots, bats and most species of possums are just some of the animals that need hollows for protection, sleeping, digesting, resting or raising their young. But even though hollows are nothing but space, they can’t exist without trees—big, old trees. Yet it is these very trees that are being chopped down faster than you can say “chopsticks“.

This text is based on the cutting-edge work of one of Australia’s foremost ecologists. The photos to accompany the text are the result of years of Esther’s photographic prowls through the many forest and woodland habitats of the southeast.
