Cane Toads Invade Top End

01
02

Crocodiles are not the favourite wildlife of tourists nor residents in the Northern Territory, but when they were found dead in Katherine Gorge, there was cause for alarm. About ten freshwater crocodiles were suddenly found floating in the river in April and May of 2001. That, plus the coincidental sightings and sounds of cane toads in the upper reaches of the Katherine River indicated that the innocent crocs were being poisoned from eating cane toads.

Because Esther photographed a major feature for Australian Geographic in 1996 (for which she received an award), she felt compelled to take up this latest thread of the story about how this invader is spreading like a disease across the Top End of the Australian continent.
