The Men from Snowy River
In 1890 Banjo Patterson wrote a poem about a pony chase through the wild Australian mountain country. The Man from Snowy River was an instant hit, selling out completely in a week, and remains one of Australia’s all time favourites. The legend he created lives today.
Brumbies are prized horses to catch. To this day, the cattleman who spots a brumby while on a high country muster will break away from the drove to chase the wild horse furiously over the hills and gullies.
But Mountain Cattleman are waging a war and it’s one they will probably lose. As recreational pursuits such as skiing, bushwalking, fishing and four wheel driving increase, so the cattle are being pushed out of the high country. The mystique of the daring mountain horseman may soon be little more than a nostalgic poem.
