Life in the Tall Eucalypt Forests
#11 Myrtle Leaves and Stream
Old growth forest produces substantially more water run-off. Young Mountain Ash trees transpire huge quantities of water during vigorous growth periods. Much of the rain that falls is transpired through the leaves back to the atmosphere. As Mountain Ash trees mature, the rates of water transpiration also slow. More water runs off into streams, and eventually into dams. More water is available to supply Melbourne if fire and logging is excluded from water catchments and Mountain Ash forest can reach an old growth stage.
