Life in the Tall Eucalypt Forests
#26 Young Stand
Competition for space and light is intense in this densely stocked stand of a young (60-year-old) Mountain Ash forest. These stands will undergo a process called self-thinning. The number of seedlings is reduced from more than 2.5 million per hectare in young forest to a mere 30-40 giant stems in a 300-year-old old growth forest.
