The Nature Photography Cookbook

About the book

With this cookbook, you’ll learn how to create little jewels of nature. If you want to reveal the beauty of the natural world, if you enjoy photographing gorgeous butterflies and birds, scaly reptiles, furry mammals or tranquil scenery, you’ll learn to interpret them to show a magnificence far beyond what an untrained eye would see. Maybe you want to create photos that will brighten up your living room or an office cubicle.  Or maybe you want to bring home the memory of an exotic safari adventure or a memorable vacation. Whatever your motive in producing gorgeous nature photos, I’m here to make it as easy as possible for you.

With this book, I hope to shave months, or even years, off your learning curve. I have been a full-time, professional nature photographer for 30 years. When I started leading workshops I discovered that participants wanted to get great results as quickly as possible. Years ago, I was taught the techniques the slow way; it took four years at a professional photography institute. But beginners, amateurs, and even semi-professionals don’t have the time or inclination to grind away like I did. So I came up with my “cookbook” system. When you pick up a traditional cookbook, you just want to get the meal on the table - you don’t want to become a triple star chef. So that’s the mission I’ve adopted - how to get a fantastic shot - quicksmart.

But wait. Maybe there are a few readers who do want the “why” of a technique. Well, I’ve supplied that too. There is an explanation at the back, in the 22-page Glossary, of all the important terms and procedures used in the book. And best of all, there are links from the recipes to the specific term in the glossary. The book is easy to use whether you just follow the steps in taking a picture, or follow the links that take you to short explanations for deeper knowledge.

“The whole concept is new…I've never seen anything like it before. I wish I had it when I was starting out. The advice you give is clearly set out, clearly defined and easy to understand. That's the way people learn most easily - if they're taken progressively from simple step to simple step, just like a recipe book - the analogy with a cookbook is excellent.”
