Green Jumping Spider

“More jewels than spiders” is how jumping spiders were described by one researcher. We’re fortunate in Australia that our tropics are home to some of these colourful treasures. With their bifocal eyes, they are also competent acrobats. Their long front legs have nothing to do with their ability to jump but are used for holding prey. It’s the short hind legs that produce the power for the pounce, just like in other hopping animals.

I didn’t have a hope of photographing this lively juvenile spider (only 5 mm long!) unless I contained it in a studio environment. I put some colourful blossoms from my garden on the table and it happily wandered about on them. The hard part was following his movements while hand-holding a combination of camera, bellows, three extension tubes plus a macro lens!
