Sword Grass Brown
“Blues”, “whites” and other colours are typically used in naming butterflies so “Sword Grass Brown” is not really such an unusual name. This particular “brown” is named after its favourite food plant, the Sword Grass, a particularly nasty plant of swamps which can slash your legs if they are unprotected. However, my particular specimen was out of its element, more interested in feeding off these Native Parsnip flowers.
TTL flash units are the best! They are boon to us nature photographers where action happens too quickly to be making mental calculations. I had mine set for minus 2/3 stop, which is great for fill-in. I also made sure that the shutter speed was about 1/60 or 1/30—just enough to record a trace of blur as the butterfly flitted about.
