Red-necked Wallaby
In Tasmania they are called Bennett’s Wallabies; in New South Wales, they’re called Red-necked Wallabies. Same animal, different names. This is a photo of a “redneck”.
I love this photo for its painterly effect. Here’s how I achieved it and I must admit, it was partly luck: I almost always have a flash unit sitting on top of a camera to add fill light whenever I might need it. Usually I have the TTL mode dialled down by about 2/3 stop but this time I left in on full exposure. The result meant the foreground grasses became overlit by the flash. Also, because they were out of focus due to the long lens, the effect gave the portrait a misty, dreamy aura. Unfortunately, putting the flash close to the lens axis means you get red eye. But thanks to Photoshop, that has disappeared.
