Spectacled Hare-wallaby

Hare-wallabies have been wiped out in Australia—well, almost. Most other species are extinct or extremely rare. However, the Spectacled Hare-wallaby still hold his own across the Top End. They typically hide out during the day in burrows dug under tussock grasses.

I had obtained some other frames showing the whole animal, but then decided to try to use its habitat to help tell the story. I loved the along, flowing pattern made by the grass tree’s leaves so, when the hare-wallaby stuck his nose out, I quickly recomposed. At first glance you don’t see that animal and you wonder, “Why am I looking at this picture?”—and then your eyes are carried by the lines of the leaves down to the timid but cute face. It’s all about composition.
