Snow Gums are common in the highlands of New South Wales and Victoria and once you are above 1500 metres, they are virtually the only species of tree. The higher the altitude the more gnarly and deformed they grow as they struggle against snow, ice, wind and other harsh elements of the sub-alpine climate.
I took this shot so long ago I can no longer remember exactly when or were. Because of its square format, I know it’s from my Hasselblad days over twenty years ago. It just goes to show that some old favourites stay with you a long time. There was nothing special involved in taking this photo—the beauty of it is in the subject itself. The only job left to the photographer is finding the angle and cropping which portray it best. Once you have composed with a square format, though, it is really hard to go back and crop into into the more familiar rectangular one.
